To use methanol as a marine fuel, existing rules, regulations and relevant guidelines have to be considered. For ocean-going vessels, significant development has taken place both at the IMO and ship classification societies while for inland waterways and smaller vessels not governed by international regulations, more work is needed. The FASTWATER Project Deliverable 7.4, “Public report on knowledge concerning safety and regulations relevant to methanol fuel” provides a summary of existing rules, regulations, and relevant guidelines and is available for download. In FASTWATER, the Deliverable will serve as a reference for safety assessments of the FASTWATER project demonstration vessels. As the work on the FASTWATER demonstration vessels proceeds, gaps and inconsistencies will be identified and specific recommendations for further regulatory development and guidance will be summarised in a new report at the conclusion of FASTWATER.
